Appeal for strong opposition to an attack of Iraq by the United States

"Nothing will come from violence"

March 12, 2003

On March 12, eleven female parliamentarians from both houses of parliament met with chief cabinet secretary Yasuo Fukuda to submit their opposition to an attack of Iraq by the United States and its supporters. 42 female members of parliament, representing over half of all females in the Diet, signed their name to the appeal.

The endorsees of the appeal called strongly for the Japanese government to oppose the attack of Iraq and for the Prime Minister to make further efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

In the appeal, it was stressed that "those most harmed in war and conflict are women and children" and that "nothing comes from violence".

Positive reaction to the appeal has been received from other parliamentarians and from concerned citizens throughout the country.
